Bruul
The most famous shopping street in Mechelen is the Bruul. Awarded the most beautiful shopping street in Belgium in 2018. Here you can wander between large retail chains, brands and small boutiques. Whether you’re looking for shoes, lingerie, sports items, accessories or a multi-brand store, you’ll find it all here. It’s also the perfect place to take a break from your shopping and enjoy an ice cream, hot waffle or snack. Time for a break? Flop on a bench by the Dyle, in the Botanical Gardens or in St Martin’s Garden, which you can reach via the Bruulpleintje next to Onder-Lieve-Vrouw or Leliëndaalkerk.
Onze-Lieve-Vrouwestraat
Do you like a shopping in a wide range of boutiques? Then this is the place to be. From premium and hip brands to cosy second chance boutiques, this street has it all. Cool fact: the street name was there long before the current set-up, but in any case more than 90% of these businesses are woman-owned today.
IJzerenleen
IJzerenleen is a gem of a shopping street. With impressive facades, beautiful shops, cosy terraces and one of the oldest town halls in Flanders, it’s always a great place to hang out. In the past, a stream used to flow here alongside the fish market. Ijzerenleen got its name from the iron handrails next to this stream, which are still there and characterise this square. Today, you can enjoy a coffee, lunch or dinner at one of the many catering outlets on IJzerenleen. You will also find specialty shops, some of which have been doing business on this street for more than 100 years. Gourmets should definitely put a pin here!
Be sure to continue along IJzerenleen over Hoogbrug and discover a cosy mix of high-quality shops, chains and authentic boutiques in Guldenstraat and the beginning of Adegemstraat.
Geitestraat
A small but fully-fledged shopping street is the Geitestraat, which connects the IJzerenleen with the Bruul. In this cosy street, the many businesses provide a varied range of products. From the latest fashions to the best second-hand finds, fun accessories, sweet delights, coffee, fine food and even a unique art gallery where you can walk right in. A street not to be missed during your shopping trip.
Hoogstraat
Hoogstraat connects the bustling shopping centre with Brusselpoort and brings together a whole raft of artisanal food and delicacies.
